We are an official partner of both ERPNext and Odoo, so we see both in real Saudi projects. Both are strong, modern ERPs. For most businesses here, though, our recommendation is ERPNext — mainly because of how its cost grows (it doesn't, per user), how it handles ZATCA, and the freedom to run it wherever you like. Here is the full picture, including when Odoo is the better choice.

The short answer

Our default recommendation is ERPNext. Odoo wins in a few specific situations:

  • Choose ERPNext if you want a complete ERP with no per-user licence fees, full ownership of your system, and the option to self-host. It suits growing and mid-sized businesses in trading, distribution, manufacturing and services.
  • Choose Odoo if you want to start with a few apps and add more as you grow, especially if a website or e-commerce is part of the plan, and you are comfortable with a per-user subscription for Odoo Enterprise.

Side by side

ERPNext Odoo
Licence Open source; no per-user licences Community edition is free; Enterprise is a subscription priced per user
What you pay for Hosting and implementation Enterprise subscription, hosting and implementation
ZATCA Phase 2 Dedicated KSA compliance apps, including a free, open-source option Saudi e-invoicing module in Odoo Enterprise
Arabic Arabic interface, right-to-left Arabic interface, right-to-left
Saudi VAT / Zakat Saudi VAT with IFRS-aligned accounting; a Zakat app Saudi accounting localisation (chart of accounts, VAT)
Hosting Frappe Cloud or your own servers Odoo Online (SaaS), Odoo.sh or on-premise
Grows by One integrated system (accounting, stock, manufacturing, sales, buying, projects, HR) Adding apps from a large catalogue, incl. website and e-commerce
Best for Complete ERP without licence costs Starting small and adding apps

The differences that matter in Saudi Arabia

1. How the cost grows with your headcount

This is the biggest practical difference. With ERPNext you can add users without licence costs. A 40-person company and a 400-person company pay for hosting and support, not seats. With Odoo Enterprise, every user is a line on the subscription. If you expect many users, such as warehouse staff, branch teams or field sales, run the numbers early. Odoo Community is free, but it does not include the Saudi ZATCA Phase 2 module.

2. ZATCA Phase 2

Both handle Phase 2, in different ways. ERPNext uses KSA compliance apps (one is free and open-source); Odoo includes the Saudi module in Enterprise. Either can also connect to a specialist platform such as Taxilla when you have several invoicing systems. See how to connect your ERP to FATOORA.

3. Payroll and HR

Both have HR features, but Saudi payroll means GOSI, Mudad/WPS files and contract rules. Many businesses pair either ERP with a dedicated HRMS. Our own HR Works integrates with Mudad/WPS, GOSI, Qiwa and Muqeem, and connects to ERPNext, Odoo or any ERP.

4. Hosting and data

ERPNext runs on Frappe Cloud or on your own servers, which some regulated organisations prefer. Odoo offers its own cloud (Odoo Online and Odoo.sh) and on-premise. Both give you a choice; ERPNext's self-hosting comes with no licence strings attached.

5. Ecosystem

ERPNext is one deeply integrated system, built on the Frappe Framework, so custom apps are straightforward to build. Odoo's strength is breadth, with a large catalogue of ready apps, including website, e-commerce and marketing.

Questions to ask before you decide

  1. How many users will you have in three years, including occasional ones?
  2. Do you need a website or online store run from the ERP?
  3. Will you self-host, or use the vendor's cloud?
  4. Which invoicing systems sit outside the ERP (POS, branches, billing)?
  5. Who will run payroll, and does it need Mudad, GOSI and Qiwa?

How we help you choose

Because we implement both, we start with your processes and your answers to those five questions, not with a product. Often the answer is clear within one workshop. Sometimes it is neither, and an enterprise platform fits better; we cover that in the best ERP software for Saudi Arabia.

Product details reflect each vendor's published offering at the time of writing; editions and pricing change, so confirm with the vendor.
